Leadership
"Leadership develops daily, not in a day!"
In the UK many individuals are promoted to supervisory roles or management positions based on their ability or performance at certain tasks. They suddenly find themselves with oversight responsibilities for teams of people. Although their knowledge, experience and skill may be superior to those of the people for which they are responsible, many have little or no experience in leading other people.
In this situation the natural reaction is to resort to 'people management' which can have disastrous consequences.
Managers Vs Leaders:
| Managers | Leaders |
|---|---|
| Treat the work and the worker as one | Differentiate between the work and the worker |
| Naturally devalue people | Naturally add value to people |
| Naturally demotivate people | Are natural motivators |
| Are efficient | Are effective |
In organisations where people are 'managed', the businesses tend to experience higher levels of job dissatisfaction, increased number of staff sick days and stress related conditions, general demotivation and higher than average staff attrition. However, where leaders are in position the reverse is true. Staff attrition and sick days are reduced; motivation, morale and job satisfaction are higher and performance and profitability increases.
